II. STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE: INTEGRATED SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Course Descriptions
SPAN 1010: Beginning Spanish 1 is a grammatical approach to introductory vocabulary and verb tenses with emphasis on vocabulary building, listening comprehension, verbal response, and writing skills. MTC goal area: (8) Global Perspective.
SPAN 1020: Beginning Spanish 2 is a continuation of SPAN 1010, a first course grammatical approach. MTC goal area: (8) Global Perspective.
All materials provide students with authentic language with the focus on communicating at a more advanced level of Spanish. Students should expect to have frequent opportunities to integrate the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) through the use of authentic materials. I use various Internet resources. Students will be guided to develop competency in listening and reading comprehension using authentic sources from journals, news, literature, interviews, Podcasts, music, and more. They will also be required to produce Spanish orally and in writing, both in informal and formal communications.
Listening: I distribute a list of authentic resources for listening and viewing at the beginning of the school year. Students are required to use these resources outside of class for assignments, enrichment and personal enjoyment. This needs to be a priority if students truly want to improve their ability to understand Spanish speakers from various cultures. Students are expected to use a variety of materials including: textbooks, Spanish videos, Spanish audios, Spanish podcasts, and Spanish music.
Reading: I encourage students to be able to read as they do in English--all types of written authentic language. Students will use a wide range of instructional materials including: newspaper articles, magazine articles, literary texts, and other nontechnical writings.
Speaking: Students will be presented with simulated and authentic conversational topics with which to refine their speaking skills. Students will have regular opportunities in class to develop their speaking skills including: use of Spanish in class, daily question and answer practice, speeches on topics of interest, and class discussion of personal opinions and reactions to authentic readings and audio sources.
Writing: Students will receive instruction on and have frequent opportunities to write a variety of compositions in Spanish including: film reviews, literary analysis, narrations about world events, reactions and personal commentaries about topics assigned in their journals, and guided compositions.
